  “But that is your getaway.”

  Bane smiled. “If you can tolerate a visit from the family on weekends and holidays, I am sure we can come to an arrangement. We’ll discuss the matter after the new year. If that suites you.”

  Of course, it did. The MacHendries were his blood. “You are too good to me, Dad.”

  “You are my son. And always will be.”

  Thoughts of Greer filled Rhys’s head. “I’m sorry I’ve ruined your Christmas Eve. And that I must take my leave now, but I need to find Greer.”

  “I think she’s found you.” Bane nudged his chin toward the top of the staircase.

  At the top step, stood Greer. A flowing gold gown graced her body. She reminded him of an angel, similar to the one he had originally picked for the tree.

  She literally took his breath away.

  As she made her way down the steps, Rhys noticed something shiny in her hand. “What are you holding?”

  “A tree topper. It was given to me by a dear friend.”

  He quirked an eyebrow. “Please don’t tell me it came from Vidar.”

  “It did. He feels terrible about breaking the angel.” She handed him the decoration.

  “It’s sacrilege to put Thor’s Hammer on a Christmas tree.”

  “He had it made special for you.” She turned the item over. “He smoothed this side of it and then carved an angel. I think you have to use it.”

  He laughed. His life had never been easy, and it certainly had never been predictable. But it was good all the same.

  He had his family, both the MacHendries and now his brother Robbie. He had his pack. He even had his friend, Vidar. And most of all, he had his Greer.

  This was the best Christmas ever.

  The magic of winter was definitely his.
